Partner visa

Partner visa allows the spouse or de facto partner of an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen to live temporarily or permanently in Australia. Based on whether you are living in Australia or overseas at the time of the application, the visa subclass differs.

Applying in Australia

  • Partner visa (Temporary) (subclass 820)

The applicant must be in Australia at the time of application. The visa is temporary leading directly to permanent Partner Visa.

  • Partner visa (Permanent) (subclass 801)

The applicant must hold a temporary Partner Visa (subclass 820) at the time of visa application. This is a permanent visa which allows an applicant to live in Australia indefinitely.

Applying overseas

  • Partner (Provisional) visa (subclass 309)

The applicant must be outside of Australia at the time of application. The visa is temporary leading directly to permanent Partner Visa.

  • Partner (Migrant) visa (subclass 100)

The applicant must hold a temporary Partner Visa (subclass 309) at the time of visa application. This is a permanent visa which allows an applicant to live in Australia indefinitely.
